The Ripple
The Ripple
Pledges, a creed, the threat, two bulletins that have nothing to do with anything, a live transmission cut off by CENSORED, and the invitation.
The Ripple is the company broadcast of Brammel and Tosk, Ordinary Supply for the Outer Reaches, a wholesaler whose customers belong to forty-one species and have never been met. Every film reports cheerfully on something plainly broken and never notices, and whenever one gets close to showing a customer, a red CENSORED stamp lands. I made the season to bring people into the Workshop SeasonWorkshop SeasonSix one-hour workshops I ran for coworkers inside a company that doesn’t exist, where everyone played an employee and left curious about their customers’ days., so every film ends on the same card: “Six weeks. One hour each. Join up.”
It runs to twenty-six films: a teaser, six blocks, eighteen specials and one intercepted signal. Two of the specials are workshop activities read as films: Two Mornings is week one’s, built entirely from a customer record, and Two Nights, One Desk is week two’s. All of them share five pieces as the same files, which is what makes them read as one channel: a boot sting, a lower third over a notice strip that never stops, a six-frame wipe, the invitation card, and “Would you like to know more?”
Each film after the teaser is a short script that lists its shots, lines and timings and builds itself from them. The paperwork and screens are drawn, the crew and places are generated on my own graphics card from recorded prompts and seeds, and most of the voices are synthesized, then given a different sound for each species. Once the season existed, the films became stock: named clips that shorter trailers are cut from, like the ones on The Outer Reaches TrailerThe Outer Reaches TrailerA four-minute trailer for the workshops’ fictional world, cut as someone flipping channels through nine broadcasts that are each already leaving.. The films were the library. The trailers were the invitation.
